Map List | New Map Categorisation System
I'm pleased to announce our new and improved map categorisation system! The new map categories and their sizes are as follows:
Closed Course [60]
Maps in this category have a defined end which is reached by following a single restricted route. There may be multiple paths for advancing from one section to the next, however the sections themselves are passed through chronologically to reach the end, bar secrets. There may be a large area of space to pro-run or hide in at the end.
Open Course [60]
Maps in this category have up to a few defined ends which are reached by following either multiple routes or a single less restricted route. These routes may be accompanied by a large area of space to pro-run or hide in before the end.
Open [120]
Maps in this category have either no defined end, or an end which is quickly reached by following short, unrestricted routes. In such maps there is greater focus on pro-running or hiding rather than reaching the end, if there is one.
Spleef [20]
Maps in this category use spleef as their most significant form of gameplay.
The categorisation of existing maps can be found in the Map Submissions board.

FAQ
How is the new system beneficial?
- The old system consisted of a mixture of gameplay and aesthetic categories, for example Parkour & Course is a gameplay category whereas Themed & Themed Course is an aesthetic category. If a gameplay category were to fill up, maps can spill over onto Themed & Themed Course, effectively nullifying the category sizes.
- The old system consisted of categories that merged two different styles of gameplay, for example Pro-Run & Maze and Spleef & Digging.
- The old system consisted of categories that overlap, for example a map with parkour and a maze can simultaneously be suitable for Parkour & Course and Pro-Run & Maze.
- The new system allows the balance between course maps and open maps to be more easily recognised.
- The new system should make the categorisation of a map less ambiguous.
How have the new categories been determined?
The new categories fulfil the following characteristics:
- They are based solely on gameplay and not on aesthetic.
- They contain maps that are similar to one another with regards to layout.
- They avoid overlap with one another.
How have the new category sizes been determined?
- There is a fifty-fifty split between course maps and open maps.
- There is a fifty-fifty split between course maps that are more restricted (closed course) and those that are less so (open course).
- A small category for spleef maps has been created to avoid under-representation of spleef maps.
- The maximum number of maps (260) is similar to the old number (250).
