It is quite obvious that there have been all sorts of issues lately regarding everything in the community, from staff-player differences to blatant disregard to any sort of rule. There’s no point in hiding behind the illusion that the social status of the New Blood community is alright anymore, and if anyone wants this place to last for a longer time, these issues MUST be addressed.
I. The Growing Rift between Staff and Players
There has been great issue recently regarding the differences between players and staff members. The place where staff and players mingled easily and trusted each other is now gone. But why is this? There’s no simple answer, by any means. I personally believe that a large reason for the issue is the way staff issues are handled by the upper echelon of the staffing group, not necessarily by their own fault, but by the entire premise of how these issues have been handled through the life of the community. When a staff member does something wrong, whether by accident or on purpose, I think that the issue should be handled behind the scenes by trying to correct the issue, rather than openly blaming the staff member for being wrong as has always been in the case. This means of handling the event creates a division between everyone: Those who agree with the staff member, and those who disagree. The main issue is that players feel they are able to more freely go against a staff member’s ruling because they believe it is wrong, because they realize that it is quite possible that the administration team will show no support for the staff member. Even if the issue is corrected, the fact that the staff member was lambasted publicly puts a dent in his/her image and allows them to be more openly criticized about their future decisions, as a result of a mistake they made in the past. It is very understandable that the administration would want staff members to be reformed, but publicly doing so is not the way to go. Another thing that I believe hastened the decline of staff-player relationship is the addition of a “staff reports” section on the forums. It is blatantly obvious that this contributes to a great feeling of mistrust towards the entire staff team. “Is the staff team so corrupt that we need a report sections just for them? Who can I even trust to help me and advise me correctly on the rules?” I don’t even need to say anything else about that.
In conclusion, I believe that the only way to repair this major issue is to rebuild the bond and trust between staff and players.
II. Server Neglect
It is widely known and believed that the current administration team (except maybe a select few) do not put in the time necessary to maintaining a successful server. I’m not saying they don’t care and i am not blasting them in any way (i personally believe that they are all great people ), just that they are unable to put in the required amount of time for the situation. There is also another sense in which the server is neglected: that of lower ranked staff members, specifically those that simply do not take the time to do their jobs and enforce the rules. Some do this because they don’t care, and some because they are afraid to, as a result of the events I stated in the first section. If I was still a staff member, I’d be afraid to do my job too. Who knows when i will make a little mistake on the wrong person which could destroy my public image and ruin my staffing career! One more issue of neglect is the effect on brand new people joining the server. I have heard countless stories of new players asking for help about either of the two servers, only to be ignored by online staff members, and then they were never seen again. The player base of the community will most definitely decrease if this is the first impression that new players are receiving!
III. The issues that result from the allowance of rulebreaking.
When people break the rules, and nothing is done by the very people who have been entrusted with the power to do something about it, it sets a dangerous precedent. Rule breakers feel less scared to break the rules, which makes a cascading effect of them doing so more often, and other people following suit. A major issue with this is the effect on brand new players who are present at the time of the occurrence. If a new player sees people being rude or hacking, etc, they will be less inclined to play here, and could easily tell their friends the same. Rulebreaking being allowed to happen by certain staff members also has a very negative effect on the ones that still do their jobs, because players will be more inclined to go against what the good staff member said since it’s not what they are used to. And without the support of the administration team (which is already weak in the first place), what is that staff member supposed to do to defend himself?
IV. Overtolerance of malicious players.
There is no shortage of people around here that are downright toxic to the community. People who openly insult staff members, other players, and everyone in between, and people who make derogatory comments about groups of people in the server as a whole and negative statements about the community for no other purpose than to cause harm. A good indicator of this toxicity is the fact that they manage to do it while just barely staying on the gray line between being within the rules and breaking them. WHY is this tolerated? An administration who doesn’t have the time to make a change? Staff members who don’t want to do anything out of the fear of the loss of their staffing position? The list could go on forever, i am just trying to state what i feel are major issues.
V. Conclusion
There’s many issues with the New Blood Community. I have tried to list what i feel are the main ones. Why am i doing this, you ask? Because i miss the way this place used to be. Because i care about the fun times that used to happen around here. Because I’ve made friends here that i don’t want to forget. Because i care about each and everyone in the community and i want them to know it.
These issues are an interconnecting web. They all must be addressed, or this place will not be salvaged. One issue could be fixed temporarily, but the other can and WILL lead to the same issue time and time again. I would love to see this place be a safe and happy place for all to enjoy, but if not enough people are willing to make that happen, then there’s nothing we can do. Thank you all for listening to my thoughts, and have a good night.
